Qualifying Medical Conditions

Depression

  • Depression as the main condition: Not established. No randomized trial has tested cannabis for depression; a 2026 Lancet Psychiatry review of 54 trials of cannabinoids for mental health found none (coverage).

  • Mood with heavy use: In observational studies, depression was more common among people using more cannabis, and cutting back often improved mood (2024 review).

Compared with standard treatment: Psychotherapy and antidepressants have strong evidence.

Good to know: The state clinical guideline advises stopping medical cannabis and getting a psychiatric assessment if mental health symptoms start or worsen. If you have thoughts of harming yourself , call or text 988.

What to ask for: No product is recommended for depression. If you use cannabis for another condition and also have depression, keep THC low , prefer CBD-dominant products, and tell your practitioner if your mood changes.
