Qualifying Medical Conditions
ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
- Muscle stiffness and cramping: Limited. A THC/CBD mouth spray reduced stiffness in a 6-week trial of 59 people with ALS and related conditions.
- Slowing the disease: Not established. The “slows progression” claims come from mouse studies.
Compared with standard treatment: Cannabis can be added to muscle relaxants such as baclofen. It does not replace ALS disease treatments.
Good to know: Some patients also use it for appetite and sleep. If swallowing or breathing is weak, avoid smoking and talk with your ALS team about the safest form.
What to ask for: A balanced 1:1 THC:CBD product taken under the tongue or by mouth spray , the type used in the ALS trial.
