Qualifying Medical Conditions
Migraine
- Stopping an attack: Limited. In a 2025 trial covering 247 migraine attacks, inhaled cannabis with THC and CBD (about 6% THC, 11% CBD) relieved pain and the most bothersome symptom (such as light sensitivity or nausea) at 2 hours better than placebo. Benefits held at 24 to 48 hours.
- CBD alone for an attack: Not established. CBD-only flower did no better than placebo.
- Preventing migraines: Not established. No controlled trials yet.
Compared with standard treatment: Triptans and the newer CGRP drugs have much larger bodies of evidence. Cannabis has not been compared with them head-to-head.
Good to know: Frequent use of any acute headache treatment can cause rebound headaches. Keep a headache diary.
What to ask for: A balanced THC + CBD product inhaled at the start of an attack. The trial used vaporized flower with about 6% THC and 11% CBD. CBD-only did not work.
