Qualifying Medical Conditions
Sleep
- Insomnia on its own: Limited. A 2026 Cochrane review found little or no clear benefit, with very uncertain evidence. Another 2026 review of 10 trials found modest improvements.
- Sleep broken by chronic pain: Moderate. Sleep quality improved modestly in pain trials, including the 2025 back-pain trial.
- Sleep in MS and PTSD nightmares: see those entries.
Compared with standard treatment: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has the strongest evidence and no drug side effects.
Good to know: Nightly THC can lead to tolerance, and stopping can cause rebound insomnia and vivid dreams for a week or two.
What to ask for: For waking up during the night, a CBN product at bedtime; one small trial used 20 mg. If pain is what keeps you up, a low-dose THC-containing oral product in the evening. Not yet proven: myrcene- or linalool-rich products marketed for sleep.
